BBC Worldwide buys into Red Planet non-scripted arm
BBC Worldwide has acquired a minority stake in our fledgling non-scripted division.
The commercial arm of the BBC has bought a 25% stake in Red Planet Pictures non-scripted arm, which we set up earlier this year.
The deal will give our new venture funding to develop a raft of popular non-scripted shows including documentaries and returnable factual entertainment formats. In return, BBC Worldwide has secured exclusive distribution rights to content produced by the venture for the next five years.
Simon Raikes, who was creative director of Wildfire TV before joining Channel 5, has begun putting together an initial development slate and recruiting a small team to help. We have big ambitions to produce a range of new non-scripted programming for UK broadcasters and international markets. We look forward to working with BBC Worldwide to grow this part of the business so that, like the scripted side, it becomes synonymous with original, ratings- winning programming.
