RED PLANET PICTURES PICK UP ‘THREE THINGS ABOUT ELSIE’ AND UPLIFTING AND INNOVATIVE TV DEVELOPMENT FROM DRAG QUEEN TROUPE DENIM
Smash hit drag queen writer-performers Denim and author Joanna Cannon’s second bestselling novel optioned for TV development
We are delighted to announce today that we are developing two new TV projects, based on bestselling book ‘Three Things About Elsie’ by Joanna Cannon and with superstar drag queen girlband Denim.
A new serial TV drama is set to be adapted from Joanna Cannon’s second novel ‘Three Things About Elsie’, which debuted at #7 in the Sunday Times Bestseller list following its release on 11th January. The novel has spent three weeks in the top 10, selling nearly 6,500 hardbacks since publication. The story focuses on eighty-four year-old Florence who’s living in sheltered accommodation when an unsettling mystery from her past comes to light. The tale draws on the author’s experiences working as a psychiatrist and with people on the fringes of society, exploring memory, friendship and old age. The series will be exec produced by Belinda Campbell, our Joint MD. The deal was brokered by Luke Speed of Curtis Brown Group on behalf of Sue Armstrong from the C+W Agency. Joanna Cannon is the author of The Trouble with Goats and Sheep which was the best-selling debut fiction paperback of 2017.
Joanna Cannon said; “I am absolutely thrilled to be working with Red Planet on bringing ‘Three Things About Elsie’ to the screen. It's a dream come true to see your words transformed into a script, and I can't think of a better partnership to guide Florence and Elsie on their new journey.”
The second project announced is Denim - a hilarious and uplifting comedic serial drama about a drag queen girlband who believe they are global superstars. The catch? They now have to prove this to the world. Denim is an all singing, all dancing, all delusional musical comedy drag super-troupe, made up of Glamrou La Denim, Crystal Rasmussen OBE, Electra Cute, Shirley Du Naughty and Aphrodite Greene (née Jones). Hilarious and tragic in equal measure, the mockumentary series will follow the Denim Queens on their dysfunctional world tour (around regional Britain), as they gear up for what they *think* is the performance of their lives. Viewers will be thrust on a rollercoaster journey with 5 misfits who believe that anything is possible (in a world that tells them it isn't), and where the power of sisterhood and friendship ultimately prevails.
Red Planet Pictures will work closely with Denim’s writer-performers Amrou Al-Kadhi, Tom Rasmussen, Guy Woolf, Hugh Wyld & Charlie Parham, who will write and star in the 30-minute episodic series. Denim are represented by Kitty Laing at United Agents LLP who brokered this deal.
Announcing the new development Belinda Campbell: “’Three Things About Elsie’ is an incredibly moving story about what it is to grow older, friendship and the importance of living in the moment. We were all enthralled by the story and jumped at the chance to adapt it for television. ‘Denim’ brings together five fantastically original and entertaining voices who have lots to say. Their stage show tackles adversity with a unique infusion of explosive pop, glamour, intelligence, politics and humour, taking audiences on an insightful, joyous and irreverent journey. We are looking forward to continuing this journey through television. It’s very exciting to be working with them.”
